Thanks for the fast delivery and low cost. I haven’t used the product much but I enjoy the other products that Honestech produces. The user interface seems very intuitive.

After trying every setting and transfer option, the best video I was able to produce looked like a movie from the 50’s that had NOT been digitally remastered. It was my goal to burn my laser discs to CD. The laser disc is the precursor to the CD, and has a high quality unprotected output. It seems that I will be replacing my collection with CD’s when my LD player fails. Very disappointed in the product.

I was very gratified with how easily the product transferred video from my 8-mm camera to my computer. I could see the video on my monitor and set-up was very easy.
I would say there are two downsides to the product:
(1) The documentation – e.g. it does not explain the file types that are created in the process, nor does it explain well what it means to save a “projectâ€. It would have been very helpful to see an overview of the file types that are created as you go from video tape to file on the computer to file types ready for burning to a DVD. I still haven’t figured out how to burn the DVD-type files to a DVD by retrieving the DVD-files created somewhere on my computer.
(2)The editor provided is somewhat limited in scope, and is very labor-intensive when you want to insert DVD “chaptersâ€. There is no time counter, so you have to basically replay the whole tape to find the sections where you want to insert chapters. The program file-naming conventions are confusing, especially when you build up multiple files. And make SURE the program “sees†your DVD burner before you try to burn a DVD.
However, having said all this, the product does the job – just be prepared to spend quite a few hours of trial-and-error before you figure out all the nuances (e.g. I got “burned†one time because I did not realize that the program EITHER writes to a DVD OR creates a set of DVD files on your hard disk. NOT BOTH AT THE SAME TIME, as you might have expected.)
It became evident that they had shorted the editor in order to encourage you to spend another $60 to get what is presumably an easier-to-use editor. However, once I figured out how to slice out worthless sections of the video, I got a nice set of clean segments (I was editing old videos of my son’s wrestling matches). There are some cute “transitions†you can enter between tape segments – but note that these transitions are NOT the same as inserting “Chaptersâ€. There was no explanation of how to best relate Transitions to inserted Chapters.

Perhaps my favorite feature about this product is that it’s not just a VHS-to-DVD converter, but that it can handle any input as long as it’s spit out via RCA A/V cables or S-Video. The software is powerful and has lots of options under the hood for the power user.

This was an easy install and even easier to use. Produced great results from a number of older VHS tapes. I have yet to try the audio transfer from tapes, but with my experience with the vhs tape, it should be a breeze.
